In the case of conspicuous features in the regular Non-Target-Analysis, an attempt is made to identify the unknown substances. This can be done by comparison with known databases, by using structure elucidation algorithms or by manual interpretation of the mass spectra.

In order to make a clear identification, the suspect substance must be available as an analytical reference standard so that it can be verified using various criteria (mass, isotope, fragment spectrum and retention time). The concentration is then determined. If a newly identified substance exceeds the general precautionary value of 0.1 µg/L, its relevance to the aquatic environment is assessed. Depending on the properties of the substance and the concentration in the watersamples, further steps are taken, e.g:

  • Inclusion in regular monitoring
  • Inclusion in the ECHO measurement programme
  • Further observation in suspect screening
