Yellow line: Distribution of allis shad in the middle of the 19th century
Hundreds of thousands of allis shad migrated several hundred kilometers upstream into the upper Rhine. They also migrated into large tributaries (e.g. Mosel, Main, Neckar).
Already at the beginning of the 20th century the population collapsed and today only single shads are registered in the Rhine system.
